US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, via Huffington Post:
One of the issues I have been preaching about around the world is collecting taxes in an equitable manner, especially from the elites in every country . . . It is a fact that around the world the elites of every country are making money. There are rich people everywhere, and yet they do not contribute to the growth of their own countries.”
She has said this kind of thing before, suggesting this can (among other things) be a matter of national security:
“Pakistan cannot have a tax rate of 9 percent of GDP when land owners and all of the other elites do not pay anything or pay so little it’s laughable, and then when there’s a problem everybody expects the United States and others to come in and help.”
What’s most interesting, perhaps, is that it’s news when someone says the blindingly obvious.
