Never get into a fight with a pig

Posted by: Nick Shaxson in: Thoughts

Along with many others who speak publicly on controversial issues, I have been the victim of a fair share of smears, innuendo, outright lies and distortions. It kind of goes with the territory, and I have learnt to live with it, more or less. As it happens, there are a couple of things out there right now that I’m tempted to respond to – but I won’t (and I won’t say what they are), for reasons this blog explains.

The other night I was having dinner with somebody in this field, a U.S. citizen who is also the subject of a lot of public vitriol, and he put this in simple terms. Here’s what he said.

“Never fight with a pig. You will get stressed out and covered in mud. And the pig will enjoy it.”

(I hadn’t heard this before, but it turns out to be an old saying.) But I like the approach. I’ll always engage in reasoned debate. I love it.

But when the poison starts flying, unless I feel there is a particularly good reason to answer back, I think I’m going to get on with other, more important things.

In a similar vein.
“Never try to teach a pig to dance. It won’t work and the pig won’t like it.”
(Quoted by Judge Judy, although it may be older)
