Treasure Islands: Second Guardian Extract

Posted by: Nicholas Shaxson in: Tax Havens, The Book

The Guardian is now running the second long extract of Treasure Islands, following Saturday’s double-page spread. Today’s extract has a more historical focus, drawn mainly from the Introduction and the Construction of a Spider’s Web chapter (Chapter 6 in the UK edition.) It explores Britain’s role in having a substantial measure of control, while going to great lengths to hide that control. The very excellent Paul Sagar needs special thanks for his part in helping me research these historical episodes.

What surprised me when researching this – and it still surprises me – is how Britain has managed to keep all this so hidden for so long.

Today’s story comes with a short, but extremely important, examination of just what a tax haven is.

Now read on.

Nick, thanks so much.

It was a real pleasure to be part of this. Shamefully, I still haven’t picked up a copy, despite this having now been published 4 full days ago!

Hope you are well, and keep up the good work. Looking forward to the documentary!
